Fund of the Historical Archive of the Central University of Venezuela

The Constitutions of 1698 (of the Seminario College) and 1721 (of the University of Caracas), as well as the Rectoral Auto of 1725, are the legal bases for the creation of the University Secretariat and especially the University Archive. The documentary evidence that rests in the current Historical Archive of the Central University, Venezuela (U.C.V). indicate that there was already a relatively organized archive around 1710, and when Br. Joseph Felipe Martínez was installed in 1725 as first secretary of the University, he received a documentary repository that dated back to papers issued from the last third of the 17th century (Navas, 2003)

Between 2002 and 2003, the necessary approval procedures were achieved before the Rectorate, the University Council and the National Council of Universities, to transform the old University Archive Department into a new Directorate of the Secretariat in the UCV organizational chart, which would be called from now on as: Central Archive Directorate Central Archive Directorate of the UCV Secretariat. The new Central Archive Directorate, which began operating in January 2003, was made up of two large Departments, the Active and Historical Archive Department and the Certifications Department. Additionally, since 2006, the Correspondence Office was integrated into the Central Archive Directorate.
